Upon discovering mold in their home, many people want to take matters into their own hands. Their first instinct is to use bleach, vinegar, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, or paint to cover it up or get rid of it, but many of these methods are nothing more than myths and can actually do more harm than good. Local Law 61 was passed by NYC in 2018. This law established standards for mold assessment, mold abatement, and mold remediation in certain types of buildings. The law requires the person handling the mold to have proper training, proper licensing, and requires them to follow minimum work standards. All disinfectant products must be identified and EPA approved, notices of the project must be posted, personal protective equipment must be provided and worn, and many rules and regulations must be enforced to protect the consumer against fraud. Additionally, a Mold Remediation Work Plan Notification Form and a Mold Remediation Work Plan must be filed and submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection.
“You may be subject to penalties that range from $800 to $10,000 from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) if you fail to hire the appropriate licensed mold assessors to remediate mold, and/or if the person holding a mold assessment license does not file the required Post-Remediation Assessment Form and Mold Post-Remediation Certification” (NYC DEP)
